If you intend to live in Ukraine for more than 90 days at a time, the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) is what unlocks the rest of your legal life here — from a tax ID and bank account to long-term leases and a driving licence. Yet the path to a TRP depends almost entirely on which basis you apply under, and every basis carries its own document list, timeline and quiet pitfalls.
Pick the basis before the paperwork
Common routes include employment or appointment as a director where the applicable work-authorisation requirements are met; a qualifying founder, participant or beneficial-owner investment of at least EUR 100,000 in a Ukrainian legal entity; marriage to a Ukrainian citizen; volunteering through an eligible organisation; and the Diia City pathway for qualifying IT specialists. Merely owning shares in a Ukrainian LLC does not by itself establish a TRP basis. Each route has different evidence and procedural requirements, so the legal basis should be confirmed before documents are prepared.
The realistic timeline
Document gathering: 1 – 3 weeks (longer if police clearance must come from your home country)
Submission: a single in-person appointment
Decision: up to 15 working days statutorily
Card production: a further 1 – 2 weeks
Address registration: within 30 days of card collection
Where applications fail
The most common refusal grounds are mismatched translations, missing apostilles on foreign-issued documents, and inconsistent dates between the contract and the supporting letter. None of these are dramatic — they just need an experienced eye before you submit.
If you are coming for a year or longer, treat the TRP as the foundation of your other arrangements, not as the last item on the list.
